Established in 1949, the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) program has implemented decades of survey research along the California Current Ecosystem to investigate how environmental conditions and fishing activity affect Pacific sardine and other coastal pelagic species populations.

As Scripps Director Margaret Leinen highlights, we need to convey the importance to people, have people understand that, we need to teach it, and we also have a responsibility to “walk the talk”and have the smallest footprint that we can have on the planet.
